SUMMARY:Community Action for Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The Maryland Department of Planning is hosting the “Community Action for Climate Change” webinar on Tuesday\, August 6 at 1:00 PM ET. Discover how local initiatives can drive climate resilience\, featuring insights from Cate Mingoya and Mara Parker. Unprecedented heat waves\, storms of the century\, and devastating fires are impacting communities across the country. While large-scale interventions in policy and technology are necessary to preserve the planet\, the most impactful adaptation solutions often originate at the local level. However\, with something as large as the climate crisis\, it can be hard for local communities to know where to begin. This webinar\, featuring Cate Mingoya\, Author of Climate Action for Busy People\, and Mara Parker\, Montgomery County\, MD Climate Adaptation Program Manager\, will present a roadmap with helpful case studies for anyone who wants to boost their community’s climate resilience and move the needle toward environmental justice. Participants of this live webinar are eligible for 1.5 AICP CM credits.\nRegister Here: us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/9717213171516/WN_GRvXxaLfQi6n8D-2kqDGoQ?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=#/registration https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/9717213171516/WN_GRvXxaLfQi6n8D-2kqDGoQ?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery&utm_term=#/registration

SUMMARY:The Evolution of Knowledge Management at Airports
DESCRIPTION:TRB Webinar: The Evolution of Knowledge Management at Airports\nIndustry-wide\, airports are experiencing disruptive and continuous changes that include the rapid introduction of new technology\, financial constraints\, retirements\, and the need to replace seasoned veterans. These changes are compounded by a diminishing pipeline of individuals interested in working at airports. While the term “knowledge management” is not in widespread use at airports\, many are already applying techniques\, such as documenting standard operating procedures or conducting after-action reviews following airport disruptions. Knowledge management (KM) is a well-established discipline for creating\, capturing\, sharing\, and leveraging essential knowledge needed for success. Without tasking these deliberate steps\, airports may face reduced efficiency\, degradation of customer service\, and increased vulnerability to business and operational interruptions. TRB will host a webinar on Wednesday\, July 24\, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM Eastern that will provide practical approaches and solutions that any airport can use to facilitate active and continuous knowledge management. \nThis webinar is based on ACRP Research Report 258: The Evolution of Knowledge Management at Airports https://nap.nationalacademies.org/catalog/27399/the-evolution-of-knowledge-management-at-airports . \nThis webinar is sponsored by TRB’s Airport Cooperative Research Program. \nThere is no fee to attend this webinar. Research related to UHPC has been ongoing for the past few decades. Early widespread adoption of UHPC was for connections between prefabricated bridge elements\, and the next phase of adoption focused on preservation and repair activities. Looking forward\, the use of UHPC for primary structural members has emerged as a compelling application\, as it will allow for reduced dead loads\, decreased girder depths\, increased span lengths\, elimination of intermediate piers\, and extended service life\, among other possible benefits. The release of the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Structural Design with Ultra-High Performance Concrete is expected to allow designers to begin engaging UHPC. The objective of this workshop is to provide background\, context\, and foundational knowledge to bridge owners and designers interested in using UHPC for structural applications. The workshop builds on a basic knowledge of reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge design to introduce and explain aspects of analysis and design unique for UHPC structural elements. \nDetails for the rest of the program at IBC can be found here https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https:%2F%2Flnks.gd%2Fl%2FeyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDEsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vZXN3cC5jb20vYnJpZGdlL3Byb2dyYW0vIiwiYnVsbGV0aW5faWQiOiIyMDI0MDQxNS45MzM1MTEyMSJ9.u4ScJcrHOfodo30pXP2whtLj6v1f54h2CAWX6t8xlvc%2Fs%2F1159082835%2Fbr%2F240722540990-l&data=05%7C02%7Cdavid.aimen%40ejb.rutgers.edu%7C4bc04923fc054973368408dc5d4ef09d%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C638487841877049799%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=cWWE4iSBT6xd3SjmLXaQkzZ%2FyhkhING1dRUzTlNPwiM%3D&reserved=0 . Alongside the intended effects of these innovations are some emerging\, unintended adverse consequences. Legal and political processes exist in part to prevent and mitigate such harms. This presentation offers a systematic analysis of the emerging routes by which applications of embodied artificial intelligence—robotics—elicit public policy responses. It develops a typology that classifies robotics applications according to how they interact with individual humans\, large-scale human populations\, and specific physical settings; and whether the robots operate alone\, in swarms\, or in integrated cyberenvironments. Each case interacts with public policymaking processes in different ways\, spanning tort liability law\, regulatory codes and standards\, and policies for assessing and managing risk. Clear roles emerge for voluntary standards\, international collaboration among governance bodies\, professionals cross-trained in robotics and public policy\, and institutions that effectively anticipate emerging problems.

SUMMARY:Equitable Growth in the City: Problems\, Approaches\, and Public Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:A challenge for 21st century cities is how to foster economic growth that benefits all stakeholders—present and future residents\, businesses and non-profit institutions—without gentrification or worsening entrenched inequality. Few cities have taken on this project like Newark\, NJ. Equitable Growth in the City will bring together elected officials\, community-based actors\, scholars and members of the private sector in conversation about how to equitably address the problems and approaches to growing cities like Newark. We will examine topics such as the creation of equitable growth advisory commissions\, interdisciplinary perspectives on affordable housing development\, and the unseen connections between housing and health outcomes. Along the way\, we will present recent public scholarship on the many points of law and policy involved in equitable growth. No person has been a greater champion for these collaborations between universities and their cities than outgoing Newark Chancellor Nancy Cantor. We will celebrate her during the luncheon at which the Honorable Mayor Ras Baraka will deliver the keynote. Please join us!\nIn-Person RSVP: https://forms.gle/dEDj75tpezwmBdyw7\nOnline (Zoom) RSVP: https://rutgers.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ieGOsDosTV6he1f3ABUNFw
