SUMMARY:Development of an Innovation Corridor Testbed for Shared\, Electric\, Connected\, and Automated Transportation
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will highlight UC Riverside researchers’ efforts to develop an Innovation Corridor testbed for enabling research in shared mobility\, vehicle electrification\, and connected and automated transportation. Developed as part of the City of Riverside’s Smart-City initiative\, this Innovation Corridor consists of a six-mile section of University Avenue between the UC Riverside campus and downtown Riverside\, and supports various transportation modes including passenger vehicles\, trucks\, transit\, bicycles\, and various forms of micro-mobility. Researchers have instrumented this corridor with various infrastructure sensors and equipment to support research in shared\, electric\, connected\, and automated transportation. Thus far\, the team has equipped the corridor with roadside communications equipment\, advanced traffic signal controllers\, and video systems at several key intersections to help improve safety\, mobility and environmental sustainability. With this initial instrumentation\, researchers have carried out connected vehicle experimentation that utilizes the signal phase and timing data from these intersections to adjust vehicle speeds to smooth traffic flow and reduce emissions. In parallel\, the team has set up a high-fidelity simulation environment of the Innovation Corridor\, which can be used to design and evaluate potential future connected and automated vehicle strategies with different levels of electrification. The researchers are also using these models to determine what types of shared mobility systems will be successful in the city. A number of future projects are already planned for the Innovation Corridor\, including installing air quality sensors along the roadway and investigating the effects of traffic management strategies on local air quality.

DESCRIPTION:Green infrastructure stormwater management is widely promoted by state and federal agencies as the proper way to control\, treat and reduce stormwater runoff and its associated problems. Webinar on Analysis of Local Bus Markets.\nThis Lunchtime Tech Talk! webinar will feature two presenters\, Deva Deka\, Ph.D.\, Assistant Director\, Research at Rutgers – Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center and Susan O’Donnell\, Senior Director\, Business Analysis and Market Research at NJ TRANSIT. \nNJ TRANSIT operates approximately 250 bus routes throughout New Jersey. Bus riders constitute almost 60 percent of all riders using NJ TRANSIT services\, including commuter rail and light rail. For many New Jersey residents\, those buses are essential for meeting almost all daily travel needs. For the past five years\, the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University conducted onboard surveys of those bus riders in different parts of New Jersey for projects funded by the NJDOT Bureau of Research and sponsored by NJ TRANSIT. \nThis webinar will present information on the survey methodology\, key findings\, and the use of the survey data by NJ TRANSIT for various purposes. The survey methodology discussion will focus on questionnaire design\, survey scheduling\, data collection\, data cleaning and weighting\, and analysis. The presenters will discuss research finding pertaining to bus rider characteristics\, trip characteristics\, and benefits of buses to society at large.
