SUMMARY:Commercial Motor Vehicles and Crowdsourced Data
DESCRIPTION:New Jersey and Colorado DOTs are using crowdsourced data and private sector partnerships to deliver real-time information to commercial vehicles and improve the safety of all road users. Because commercial vehicles have far greater stopping distances\, unexpected slowdowns on roadways pose a significant safety threat\, particularly at the back of queues. Transportation agencies can now deliver in-cab alerts about road conditions through connected truck service providers to help commercial vehicle drivers approach and react more quickly to roadway incidents\, work zones\, and adverse weather conditions.\nRegister for the upcoming Crowdsourced Data for Commercial Vehicles webinar https://events-na13.adobeconnect.com/content/connect/c1/2334344376/en/events/event/shared/2386551631/event_registration.html?sco-id=9589205737&_charset_=utf-8 to learn how New Jersey and the Colorado Departments of Transportation are improving roadway safety through in-cab alerts and broader truck information (e.g.\, parking or inspection). \nThis webinar is a part of the Adventures in Crowdsourcing webinar series https://transportationops.org/edc5/adventures-crowdsourcing-webinar-series sponsored by FHWA Every Day Counts Round Six (EDC-6) Crowdsourcing for Advancing Operations Program https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/innovation/everydaycounts/edc_6/crowdsourcing.cfm . Achieving a Safe System is a complex journey that requires strengthening all elements in the system by numerous stakeholders. Stakeholders across the transportation community are already acting to advance the Safe System approach by making decisions guided by the underlying Safe System principles. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn about strategies that state and local transportation agencies are implementing to advance the Safe System approach with focus on the Safe Roads and Safe Speed elements. The strategies are presented as a “playbook” intended to assist agencies by providing ideas and potential practices for Safe System implementation. Similar with a playbook for a football team\, it is not necessary to run every play to achieve your winning objective. Also\, selecting appropriate “plays” to run will depend on where your agency is located “on the field”. \nInstructor: Mark Doctor\, PE\, Senior Safety & Design Engineer – Federal Highway Administration Resource Center

At an intersection\, this is accomplished by influencing conflict points\, speed\, and crash angles\, and considering exposure and complexity. Intersection projects are opportunities to explore how to apply Safe System principles to the project development planning and design decisions in support of reaching the zero goal\, as well as a performance-based approach to safety. \nThe Safe System assessment of an intersection can serve as an additional metric to inform alternatives analysis and identify an optimal solution for an intersection. The SSI method uses data that are typically available early in a project development lifecycle. In this webinar\, you will learn about the SSI framework and explore the potential to apply the methodology within the decision-making process for intersection projects. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn how to leverage the Safe System approach principles to advance the parallel goals and efforts for building Complete Streets and promote safe\, affordable\, accessible\, and multi-modal access to opportunities and services while reducing disparities and adverse community impacts.

To make meaningful progress\, a new paradigm is needed in the way we think about the traffic safety problem. The Safe System approach is a recognized international road safety best practice that is rapidly gaining awareness and application in the United States. It is an approach centered around creating a road system that accommodates inevitable human mistakes with a focus on avoiding severe outcomes. Creating a Safe System requires strengthening all the elements within the system and leveraging collaborative partnerships. \nIn this webinar you will learn about the six foundational principles of the Safe System approach and the five elements of the system that must work together to achieve the vision of zero roadway deaths. This session will explain the important distinctions that make a Safe System approach different from traditional approaches to road safety

SUMMARY:Reducing Rural Roadway Departures - Breaking Down Barriers: Roadside Safety Hardware
DESCRIPTION:April 19\, 20221:00-3:00 pm ET\nRegister https://usdot.zoomgov.com/webinar/register/WN_hs1GRHCNSRmQO1Agrp-hQA \nThis webinar is hosted by FHWA in cooperation with the National Local Technical Assistance Program Association (NLTAPA) and the National Center for Rural Road Safety. \nRoadside safety hardware is a proven safety countermeasure for when vehicles physically leave the roadway. Hardware\, such as barriers\, sign supports\, and work zone devices are commonly used to reduce the potential severity of crashes on the roadside. Knowing how\, when and where to install roadside hardware can be a challenge for transportation agencies. Furthermore\, maintenance and replacement of installed hardware with newer more advanced hardware adds to the challenge.
