SUMMARY:TRB AMS 50: Transit and Gentrification
DESCRIPTION:TRB AMS 50 Economic Development and Land Use will host a webinar at 11 am-12 pm (EST) on Friday\, March 25\, 2022. Two scholars will present their research on Transit and Gentrification.\nPlease join the webinar using the following link: https://bit.ly/3MpmKG8 \nTitle: Transit-Induced Gentrification or Vice Versa? A Study of Neighborhoods Around Light Rail Stations From 1970–2010 \nPresenter: Dr Jyothi Chava is the research scholar in equitable transit and TOD planning. Her research focus is evaluating and incorporating equity related aspects in public transport planning and sustainable transportation planning with emphasis on non-motorized transportation\, transit and transit-oriented developments. She is currently working as a senior Data scientist in Anthem. Previously\, she worked as a project scientist and transportation planner at Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bengaluru\, Innovative Transportation Solutions (iTrans – an incubation unit of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi) and Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Programme (TRIPP)\, IIT Delhi. Jyothi holds a PhD in equitable public transport planning from Curtin University\, Masters in transportation planning from IIT Delhi and Bachelor’s in civil engineering from Nagarjuna University. \nAbstract: In the 1990s\, some cities across the United States invested significantly in expanding light rail transit (LRT) systems. As a result\, transit-oriented development (TOD) near new stations became a desirable planning goal for local governments and lucrative to developers. In this study we examined evidence of gentrification in all LRT station areas before and after the opening of these new stations. We also tested the prevalence of gentrification in station areas specifically characterized as TODs. Longitudinal data across seven regions\, from 1970 to 2010\, demonstrated signs of gentrification in proximity to new stations compared with control areas. By 2000\, the share of the White population grew near LRT stations\, whereas the percentage of Black residents remained flat. From 1990 to 2010\, we found signs of gentrification based on both demographic and economic indicators\, including low-income populations. We also tested the relationship among built environment variables and a gentrification index\, which revealed a positive correlation with walkability\, density\, and diversity variables. Our study did not include data to compare the differences in effectiveness between market-rate versus affordable housing\, which should be part of future research. \nTitle: Transit-Induced Gentrification and displacement: The state of the debate \nPresenter: Dr. Elizabeth Delmelle is an associate professor of geography at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she researches neighborhood dynamics\, urban transportation\, and the interaction between the two. She and her colleagues recently completed an NSF-sponsored project that investigated the link between new rail investments and neighborhood changes from a multi-scalar and mixed-methods perspective. She currently serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Transport Geography and for the 2021-2022 academic year is a visiting scholar at the University of Amsterdam in the Department of Geography\, Planning\, and International Development. \nAbstract: Investments in new transportation infrastructure hold the potential to transform the urban socioeconomic landscape by reshaping accessibility and by encouraging new developments around these investments. This chapter outlines the theoretical arguments for why and how transport\, specifically rail transit\, is expected to impact the socioeconomic composition of neighborhoods and reviews the relevant empirical literature on the subject. Neighborhood socioeconomic change\, including gentrification\, can be viewed as the product of shifts in residential sorting of residents reacting to the placement of a new (transit) amenity which may place increased demand for living in a particular area. This demand may place an upward pressure on nearby housing values and rents\, affecting the socioeconomic composition of those willing and able to afford these price premiums\, thus spurring or accelerating gentrification. Rising land values may also lead to the disproportionate exit of lower-income residents unable to keep up with elevated rents or property taxes. To date\, the empirical evidence on the link between transport investments and gentrification has mixed findings\, very often underscoring the importance of local context in directing a neighborhood’s path. Research has overwhelmingly centered on aggregate neighborhood changes\, but several studies have recently emerged that center on individual movements that give rise to these neighborhood-scale outcomes.

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Tech Talk! WEBINAR: Goodluck Point Beneficial Use of Dredged Material via Nearshore Placement and Shark River Sediment Transport Model
DESCRIPTION:Join the NJDOT Bureau of Research and attend our next Lunchtime Tech Talk! – a webinar featuring Maritime Transportation Research.\nNearshore placement of dredged sediment is a Natural and Nature-Based Features strategy with the dual benefits of providing ecosystem enhancement and reduction of coastal flooding while at the same time providing a viable\, cost-effective long-term beneficial use option for disposal of dredged materials. But\, improper placement of dredged materials can damage habitat or wash away\, providing little or no benefit. Strategic placement requires knowledge of site conditions and sediment transport behavior to provide ecosystem enhancement and resiliency. The researchers will present preliminary findings for a nearshore sediment placement project at Goodluck Point in Berkeley Township\, New Jersey. \nTo support ongoing efforts to effectively manage the New Jersey Maritime Transportation System (MTS)\, the researchers are also customizing a Delft3D morphological model to improve estimation of channel shoaling for the state’s navigable waterways. Successful deployment of this model for the Shark River will facilitate expansion to the entire New Jersey MTS and support NJDOT’s efforts to improve navigability and facilitate operations and maintenance of the maritime network. \nPresentations will be given by: \nDaniel Barone\, Ph.D.\, Associate Research Professor\, Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences\, Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) & Department of Geography\, Rutgers University \nRobert Miskewitz\, Ph.D.\, Associate Professor\, Department of Environmental Sciences\, Rutgers University \nThe event is free\, but registration is required to receive the URL link to the webinar. AICP and PE credits will be available\, but you must be registered for the event. The BIL specifically mentions project bundling and bridge bundling as alternative contracting methods for enhanced program delivery and encourages agencies to establish clear procedures for these methods so the known benefits might be more consistently realized.\nThe Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) would like to help State and local transportation agencies make bundling a routine process for saving time\, money\, and resources\, especially as additional funds from the BIL are rolled out. States may create bundled projects with local agencies\, and local agencies may bundle projects with other local agencies. \nThis webinar https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https:%2F%2Flnks.gd%2Fl%2FeyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDMsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsImJ1bGxldGluX2lkIjoiMjAyMjAyMjguNTQxMTM3OTEiLCJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczovL2Nvbm5lY3Rkb3RjcXB1YjEuY29ubmVjdHNvbHV0aW9ucy5jb20vY29udGVudC9jb25uZWN0L2MxLzcvZW4vZXZlbnRzL2NhdGFsb2cuaHRtbD9mb2xkZXItaWQ9MTMxMjQxODkyNyZhbXA7ZnJvbS1vcmlnaW49Y29ubmVjdGRvdC5jb25uZWN0c29sdXRpb25zLmNvbSJ9.wllAY9pp4Cz3WFrM_AHzwEozppgbC3BoP9aiQYQmODc%2Fs%2F1159082835%2Fbr%2F127263505149-l&data=04%7C01%7Cdavid.aimen%40ejb.rutgers.edu%7C9df297be911e4f357bf508d9fac70372%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C637816555220192935%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=e7sZc%2BBQzQT2jw6ZQ%2BnriOOjqR69ZDaGQAiw2lGJ6dk%3D&reserved=0 will focus on how local agencies might better implement bundling and will include example interjurisdictional agreement templates and case studies from Georgia\, Nebraska\, and Ohio. SUMMARY:Shaping the Future of Mobility
DESCRIPTION:RENEWED CALL FOR ABSTRACTS\nSustainability and Emerging Transportation Technology (SETT) \nShaping the Future of Mobility \nNational Academies of Sciences\, Engineering and Medicine \nArnold and Mabel Beckman Center\n100 Academy Drive\, Irvine\, CA 92617 \nThis event\, which was originally scheduled for 2021\, is being rescheduled to March 15-18\, 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. \ni START AN APPLICATION https://trb.secure-platform.com/a/solicitations/38/home i \nConference Overview and Scope\nThe Sustainability and Emerging Transportation Technology (SETT) Conference is being rescheduled for March 15-18 2022. \nThe focus of the conference remains on investigating solutions for shaping rapidly advancing transportation technologies (e.g.\, connected and automated vehicles) and new approaches to mobility (e.g.\, shared services) in ways that will benefit all users of the transportation systems. The SETT 2022 conference will bring together researchers\, practitioners\, and policy-makers to discuss and debate the intersection of sustainability and emerging transportation technologies with the focus on solutions. As these terms are often used quite broadly\, we define them here. \n * Sustainability takes a holistic view of the “triple-bottom-line”\, such as environmental\, economic\, and social factors. Technology should not create more problems than it solves\, particularly with regards to social equity (i.e.\, accessibility\, inclusiveness\, safety\, and security)\, economic efficiency (i.e.\, cost-effective and within people’s ability and willingness to pay) or environmental stewardship (i.e.\, reduced carbon pollution\, and improved water and air quality).\n * Emerging transportation technologies are those in early stages of adoption\, deployed as “pilots\,” or expected to come to market in the near-term. Examples include new mobility services (e.g.\, ridesharing\, e-scooters)\, digital technologies (e.g.\, ridehailing apps\, dynamic pricing\, shared data exchanges\, and payment platforms)\, connected and automated vehicles\, transportation electrification\, and autonomous goods delivery services (e.g.\, rolling robots\, drones).

SUMMARY:CAIT Seminar Series: Celebrating International Women’s Day by Showcasing Latest Transportation Research & Equity Achievements 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 8CAIT Seminar Series: Celebrating International Women’s Day by Showcasing Latest Transportation Research & Equity Achievements\n11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.\nThe way that we think about and use transportation as it exists today has been shaped by innovative women leaders throughout history. They have contributed greatly to the safety of all modes of travel\, efficiency of our transportation systems\, and the development of new technology that drives transportation into the future. As the Region 2 USDOT University Transportation Center\, Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) tackles some of the country’s most pressing infrastructure challenges\, especially those that are endemic in high-volume multimodal corridors such as the Northeast. Many of these transportation challenges and initiatives\, from evolving freight planning to meet modern needs to better incorporating diversity in organizations and building more resilient infrastructure\, are led by women researchers. On International Women’s Day\, CAIT is taking the time to recognize some of these women leaders in transportation research\, and their recent work. In this complimentary seminar\, you will hear from: Ms. Anne Strauss-Wieder\, Director\, Freight Planning\, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA); Dr. Melissa Tooley\, Director of External Initiatives\, Texas A&M Transportation Institute; Dr. Maria Garlock\, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, Co-Director of the Program in Architecture and Engineering\, Princeton University. \nRegister at https://web.cvent.com/event/39987b3b-6606-4809-bddc-c1361e12e7e0/summary https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https:%2F%2Frutgers.us1.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D08300e89ae2155ec7ce3796ca%26id%3D76e115bb4d%26e%3Ddeb8309775&data=04%7C01%7Cdavid.aimen%40ejb.rutgers.edu%7C5736289bd46641cd9f9908da007af8d4%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C637822825418526315%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=x5Ym5laoGw62hgbb1iaplnl7RFCR6vTUi1uj0boRqHQ%3D&reserved=0

SUMMARY:CAIT Seminar Series: COVID-19 and the Economic Factors Shaping Transportation and Recovery in 2022
DESCRIPTION:With more than 1 million cases and 25\,000 fatalities\, New Jersey was one of the states hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Northeast region in particular was significantly impacted\, with many structural shifts in how people work\, travel\, and play still in place today despite rising vaccination rates. From declines in public transit ridership to supply chain delays and workforce shortages across multiple industries\, the region is confronting a new era of transportation challenges as it moves into 2022. New opportunities are arising as well\, such as the proposed infrastructure bill that represents a substantial investment in roadways\, bridges\, and transportation infrastructure not seen on such a large scale in decades.\nDr. James W. Hughes\, dean emeritus of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers and a CAIT researcher has been tracking economic recovery from COVID-19 and its impact on transportation\, demographic shifts\, and more throughout the pandemic. In this free webinar\, he will discuss these trends that transportation is facing\, opportunities\, and what the “new” normal might look like as we head into the new year.\nKey Takeaways:\n * Review latest economic trends stemming from the pandemic and how they are shifting transportation\n * Discuss what structural changes might be here to stay over the long-term\n * Learn about new opportunities that could help foster economic recovery and support transportation and infrastructure \nRegister Now https://cait.rutgers.edu/event/cait-seminar-series-covid-19-and-the-economic-factors-shaping-transportation-and-recovery-in-2022/

SUMMARY:Federal Land Management Agencies - Thermoplastic Technology- Bridge Applications
DESCRIPTION:Thermoplastic composite technology was first utilized in the production of railroad crossties and over the past decade applications have expanded use to highway bridges. The recycled material has a much longer life span than a traditional wooden bridge\, and it also offers positive features for elements encountered in extreme and variable climates. For these reasons the technology has been pursued by Federal Lands Management Agencies (FLMA) including the United States Forest Service (USFS) and United State Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).\nDuring this webinar the USFS and USFWS will present their experience with thermoplastic technology in bridge construction; highlighting their lessons learned and beneficial properties relative to FLMA bridge maintenance\, including: \n * Highly resistant to cracking and warping;\n * fire resistant;\n * resistant to most acids\, salts\, wood-boring insects\, rot and won’t rust;\n * virtually impervious to water;\n * and maintains structural integrity in humid and wet environments. \nUSFWS Project Manager- “The thermoplastic materials are the environmentally right fit to provide a great bridge with long-term sustainable green technology for the Service.” \nFor questions\, contact Morgan Malley or Andrea Kirk\, Program Managers with FHWA’s Local Aid Support at Morgan.Malley@dot.gov mailto:morgan.malley@dot.gov or Andrea.Kirk@dot.gov mailto:Andrea.Kirk@dot.gov . \nNo registration required. SUMMARY:Cycling for Sustainable Cities - Webinar (APA VA)
DESCRIPTION:Cycling for Sustainable Cities\nCycling is a sustainable means of urban travel. It has the potential to serve many short- and medium-distance trips—for commuting to and from work and school\, shopping\, and visiting friends—as well as providing recreation and exercise. Cycling promotes physical\, social\, and mental health\, helps reduce car use\, enhances mobility and independence\, and is economical for both public and personal budgets. This presentation explores how to make city cycling safe\, practical\, and convenient for a broad spectrum of ages\, genders\, and abilities. Buehler and Pucher discuss the latest cycling trends and policies around the world and consider specific aspects of cycling. Based on data from 2019-2020 from cities around the world\, they also review the impacts of COVID-19 on cycling levels and government policies to promote cycling. Taken together\, the presentation demonstrates that successful promotion of cycling depends on a coordinated package of mutually supportive infrastructure\, programs\, and policies. Cycling should be made feasible for as many people as possible and not limited to especially fit\, daring\, well-trained cyclists riding expensive bicycles. The talk is based on their recent co-edited book Cycling for Sustainable Cities (MIT Press). \nRegister now https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_kXCdeQVPRqOKzLZazbRJUg

SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Infrastructure & Transportation Asset Management Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The Fundamentals of Infrastructure & Transportation Asset Management Part 1 (FAM) course will cover the Infrastructure & Transportation Asset Management journey over the last 20 years and what we now see as the current and future trajectory of developing a sustainable and scalable asset management program\, and provide students with enough information to develop an asset management program from scratch or allow them to build upon an existing program. The course will be taught by experts from consulting as well as academia\, giving students both theory-based research and development outcomes\, and use cases and best practices that are based on real world examples.\nThe course is designed for the agency-level asset manager\, maintenance manager and engineering consultants\, and will provide all participants with a solid base of understanding of the various elements and stages of building a modern and forward-looking asset management program. \n* This 2-day course kicks off the Infrastructure Asset Management Academy For Engineers and Planners (IAMA) program. For a limited time\, this first course is being offered for free\, and after taking this class students are encouraged to complete the entire IAMA program. Learn more about the academy here. https://cait.rutgers.edu/iama/ \nDay 1: \nDay 1 will take a brief look back at TAM’s origins and will highlight a few key milestones and events that occurred along the way that helped to shape and define TAM into what it has become today and discuss the role that these – and other – events have played in influencing the future TAM trajectory. The background information provided will present the participants with a broad and useful perspective of how asset management has evolved over the previous two decades and will also establish a solid base of understanding that the attendees can leverage as they take the next steps on their TAM journey. \nDay 2: \nDay 2 will focus on several activities that are generally associated with the implementation of a TAM program. These fundamental components are not intended to be a comprehensive account of all TAM business functions\, but rather represent a more simplistic (and realistic) view of important elements of a TAM program that when implemented properly can serve as the foundation and framework for building a sustainable and scalable TAM program. \nAbout Infrastructure Asset Management Academy: \nIAMA https://cait.rutgers.edu/iama/ is a 6-course program taught by experts at CAIT and our industry partners that is designed to provide students with the knowledge\, tools\, and experience needed to make more informed decisions that can help extend the service life\, account for resiliency\, and minimize the risk of their assets\, and to take the next step in their careers. Courses will conveniently be offered virtually\, eliminating the cost and time demands of travel. Students in the program must complete 3 core classes plus 1 supplementary class in order to graduate from the academy and receive a professional development certificate from Rutgers CAIT\, PDH credits\, and a deeper understanding of asset management practices and how to apply them to their organization’s needs. \nRegister Now https://cvent.me/Eg9d99

SUMMARY:Fall Technical Webinar Series – What You Knew is Changing: MUTCD Update – Part 2
DESCRIPTION:In Session 1 of this series\, we explored some of the responses to the current Notice of Proposed Amendments (NPA) for the 11th Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). ITE’s response (available here) https://bit.ly/ITECommentsNPAMUTCD includes a call for FHWA to consider the needs of all users\, to provide greater flexibility and opportunities to innovate\, and encouragement to take a forward-looking posture with the Manual. The responses from other organizations reviewing the proposed changes such as NACTO https://nacto.org/program/modernizing-federal-standards/ have been much more adamant regarding the call to substantially reframe the MUTCD to create a safe and sustainability-first document. What does this mean to you? How might this effort lead to changes of subsequent changes to (12th Edition) MUTCD? Join our panel in exploring what a revamped version of the MUTCD could be.\nHost: Ryan Zellers https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-zellers-02002770/ \, Department Manager – Traffic Engineering\, Michael Baker International\, Western District Advertising Manager \nPanel:\nRandy McCourt https://www.linkedin.com/in/randymccourt/ \, ITE International Past President (moderator)\nPeter Koonce https://www.linkedin.com/in/pkoonce1180/ \, Engineering Manager of the Traffic Signals\, Street Lighting\, Intelligent Transportation Systems\, & Electrical Maintenance Division at the City of Portland\nDongho Chang https://www.linkedin.com/in/donghochang/ \, Washington State DOT Traffic Engineer\nJen Malzer https://www.linkedin.com/in/jen-malzer-p-eng-msc-0007a33a/ \, Engineer in the Liveable Streets Division at The City of Calgary\, Canadian District International Director \nInstructions to complete the PDH process: \nVisit http://www.pathlms.com/ite/courses/36804 https://www.pathlms.com/ite/courses/36804 www.pathlms.com/ite/courses/36804 to submit your PDHs. SUMMARY:Fall Technical Webinar Series – What You Knew is Changing: CMS\, DMS\, VMS and Automated Vehicles – Updates to standards (NEMA\, MUTCD\, NTCIP) and refresh/flicker issues with LEDs
DESCRIPTION:Most people look at dynamic message signs or traffic signals and think they are on all the time. However\, automated vehicles cameras take images so fast that they catch LEDs in the refreshing state leaving a dark image or distorted image. To address this\, finding the right balance in specifications for both the LED used in DMS and highway traffic signals and the camera speeds has the attention of IEEE\, NEMA\, ATSSA\, NCUTCD and AASHTO. At the same time\, updates to NEMA TS-4 (which guides DMS) are underway looking and consolidation and unification of definitions for changeable message signs\, dynamic message signs\, variable message signs\, hybrid signs and blank-out signs. All of this has emerged in 2011 and is leading to new guidance for designers and well as system planners in terms of specifications and jargon for the industry. Join the co-chairs of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Connected and Automated Vehicle Joint Task Force Signs Working Group for a discussion on how this affects not only DMS but traffic control signal displays\, vehicle turn signals and any LED application.\nHost: Ryan Zellers https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-zellers-02002770/ \, Department Manager – Traffic Engineering\, Michael Baker International\, Western District Advertising Manager \nPanel:\nRandy McCourt https://www.linkedin.com/in/randymccourt/ \, ITE International Past President\, Co-Chair of the NCUTCD Signs working group\, Connected-Automated Vehicles Joint Task Force (moderator)\nRoxane Mukai https://www.linkedin.com/in/roxane-mukai-903089121/ \, Co-Chair of the NCUTCD Signs working group\, Connected-Automated Vehicles Joint Task Force \nInstructions to complete the PDH process: \nVisit http://www.pathlms.com/ite/courses/36803 https://www.pathlms.com/ite/courses/36803 www.pathlms.com/ite/courses/36803 to submit your PDHs.
