SUMMARY:Land Use and Transportation Policies for a Sustainable Future
DESCRIPTION:Even though there are tremendous uncertainties in the timing and evolution path of the Autonomous Vehicles (AV) technology\, it may become a likely reality within most MPOs’ long-range regional transportation plan horizon of twenty years. Yet a recent survey of the largest MPOs in the US indicates only one of them “even mentions driverless\, automated\, or autonomous vehicles in its most recent RTP.” One of the uncertainties in assessing the impacts of AV is their direction: on one hand\, self-driving cars could increase VMT by increasing roadway capacity\, lowering costs of travel; on the other\, they may reduce VMT by enabling more car-sharing\, improving access to transit\, eliminating the fixed costs of car ownership\, and reclaiming parking space. To date\, there is no suitable conceptual framework or modeling tools available to MPOs for quantitatively assessing the likely long-term effects of AV or potential policy scenarios.\nThis project studies the possible impacts on travel and land use of the emerging AV technology and focuses on advancing this innovative mobility option by making sure it serves the greater good of building sustainable and equitable communities in its adoption. SUMMARY:CAIT Seminar Series: Studying Damages from Hurricane Maria to Improve Future Infrastructure Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Hurricane Maria left devastating effects on Puerto Rico\, its people\, and its economy when the storm struck in 2017. The damage has been totaled at $90 billion by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management\, much of which impacted the island’s transportation systems. Following the storm\, CAIT-affiliated researchers at the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico (PUPR) have been studying the damage\, examining vital transportation infrastructure that failed during the storm\, and developing resources to make local transportation infrastructure more resilient and better prepared for future natural disasters and extreme weather events.\nIn this free webinar\, CAIT-affiliated researcher Dr. Gustavo Pacheco will provide an overview of the damage done to the island by Hurricane Maria as well as its long-term impacts to date. He will also discuss latest research from PUPR quantifying this damage and case studies of traffic signs\, vehicular bridges\, and other important pieces of infrastructure that were studied. These insights have the potential help engineers to better incorporate resilience into construction projects and asset management practices considering natural disasters and storm events. Vision Zero planning may be enhanced through the use of high quality plans. Our team abstracted Vision Zero plans and identified ways in which plans could be strengthened. This webinar will discuss the findings from the plan abstraction and provide actionable feedback for communities creating new Vision Zero plans or updating current Vision Zero plans. SUMMARY:Development of an Innovation Corridor Testbed for Shared\, Electric\, Connected\, and Automated Transportation
DESCRIPTION:This webinar will highlight UC Riverside researchers’ efforts to develop an Innovation Corridor testbed for enabling research in shared mobility\, vehicle electrification\, and connected and automated transportation. Developed as part of the City of Riverside’s Smart-City initiative\, this Innovation Corridor consists of a six-mile section of University Avenue between the UC Riverside campus and downtown Riverside\, and supports various transportation modes including passenger vehicles\, trucks\, transit\, bicycles\, and various forms of micro-mobility. Researchers have instrumented this corridor with various infrastructure sensors and equipment to support research in shared\, electric\, connected\, and automated transportation. Thus far\, the team has equipped the corridor with roadside communications equipment\, advanced traffic signal controllers\, and video systems at several key intersections to help improve safety\, mobility and environmental sustainability. With this initial instrumentation\, researchers have carried out connected vehicle experimentation that utilizes the signal phase and timing data from these intersections to adjust vehicle speeds to smooth traffic flow and reduce emissions. In parallel\, the team has set up a high-fidelity simulation environment of the Innovation Corridor\, which can be used to design and evaluate potential future connected and automated vehicle strategies with different levels of electrification. The researchers are also using these models to determine what types of shared mobility systems will be successful in the city. A number of future projects are already planned for the Innovation Corridor\, including installing air quality sensors along the roadway and investigating the effects of traffic management strategies on local air quality.
