This event will be rescheduled. \nThis Lunchtime Tech Talk! webinar will feature two presenters\, Deva Deka\, Ph.D Assistant Director\, Research at Rutgers – Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center and Susan O’Donnell\, Senor Director\, Business Analysis and Market Research at NJ TRANSIT. \nNJ TRANSIT operates approximately 250 bus routes throughout New Jersey. Bus riders constitute almost 60 percent of all riders using NJ TRANSIT services\, including commuter rail and light rail. For many New Jersey residents\, those buses are essential for meeting almost all daily travel needs. For the past five years\, the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University conducted onboard surveys of those bus riders in different parts of New Jersey for projects funded by the NJDOT Bureau of Research and sponsored by NJ TRANSIT. \nThis webinar will present information on the survey methodology\, key findings\, and the use of the survey data by NJ TRANSIT for various purposes. The survey methodology discussions will focus on questionnaire design\, survey scheduling\, data collection\, data cleaning and weighting\, and analysis. The presenters will discuss research finding pertaining to bus rider characteristics\, trip characteristics\, and benefits of buses to society at large. Webinar on Evaluation of Precast Concrete Pavement Systems: Identify Existing Precast Concrete Pavement Systems and State Specifications\nFaculty and research staff members from the Rowan University CREATEs program\, Dr. Yusuf Mehta and Dr. Daniel Offenbacker\, will discuss the results of a research study performed for NJDOT. \nRigid pavements play an important role in highway infrastructure\, primarily in regions with high traffic density such as New Jersey. NJDOT is continuously exploring innovative pavement rehabilitation strategies\, such as Precast Concrete Pavement (PCP)\, that allow for faster and more durable rehabilitation of rigid pavements. NJDOT initiated a research study with Rowan University CREATEs to identify\, evaluate\, and compare precast pavement systems\, specifications\, and practices currently in use. The study included an extensive literature review and surveys with Subject Matter Experts from various state DOTs that have experience with precast pavement rehabilitations. \nThe presenters will discuss the types of precast pavement systems\, past construction experiences\, and overall recommendations for precast pavements. WEBINAR event on Dredging\, Dredged Material Management and the New Jersey Marine Transportation System.\nThis event will feature W. Scott Douglas\, Dredging Program Manager\, Office of Maritime Resources\, NJ Department of Transportation. \nThe NJDOT Office of Maritime Resources (OMR) is the lead for maintaining some 200 nautical miles of engineered waterways that provide safe navigation pathways to and from the State’s shore-based infrastructure\, and provides dredged material management services for another 150 nautical miles of Federal waterway. These waterways are part of the NJ Marine Transportation System that supports the $50 billion industry comprising international and domestic freight\, commercial fishing\, recreational boating\, travel and tourism\, marine trades and ferries. Scott Douglas will discuss OMR’s responsibilities for planning\, design\, procurement and construction services\, and coordinating the State’s waterway emergency response. In New Jersey\, approximately 60% of fatal and serious injury crashes are occurring on the local system.\nThe New Jersey Local Technical Assistance Program (NJLTAP) has partnered with the FHWA Division Office\, NJDOT Bureau of Safety\, Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs and Local Aid and Economic Development\, and our three Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to develop a half-day workshop focused on the FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures and the funding available for improvements to the local system. \nThis workshop provides guidance on the FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures that local public agencies can implement to successfully address roadway departure\, intersection\, and pedestrian and bicycle crashes. SUMMARY:FHWA/NHI - Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques for Steel Bridges
DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION:\nThe course curriculum for this training reflects current practices\, while addressing new and emerging technologies available to bridge inspectors. In addition\, the course features exemplary training; hands-on workshops for popular types of nondestructive evaluation (NDE) equipment; and a case study of an inspection plan for a fracture critical bridge. \nThe first day of the training focuses on the concept of fracture critical members (FCMs)\, FCM identification\, failure mechanics\, fatigue in metal\, and an overview of NDE methods. Day two includes demonstration sessions and hands-on applications of NDE techniques for dye penetrant\, magnetic particle testing\, Eddy current testing\, and ultrasonic testing. Days three and four emphasize inspection procedures and reporting for common FCMs\, including problematic details\, I-girders\, floor beams\, trusses\, box girders\, pin and hanger assemblies\, arch ties\, eyebars\, and cross girders/pier caps. The course will conclude with a case study detailing the preparation of an inspection plan of a fracture critical bridge. Additionally\, the course instructors will tailor discussions of topics based on State needs and requirements. \n“This training will help inspectors evaluate bridges more thoroughly and will provide them with additional knowledge in how structures work and what can take place when they don’t work\,” states Bill Drosehn\, district bridge inspection engineer for the Massachusetts DOT. \nNote: Hosts are required to provide safety goggles for all course participants as well as a well-ventilated space for conducting the dye penetrant demonstration. \nOUTCOMES: \nUpon completion of the course\, participants will be able to: \n  * Identify fracture critical members (FCMs)\n  * Identify problematic details\n  * Identify areas most susceptible to fatigue and fracture\n  * Record defects\n  * Evaluate defects\n  * Evaluate nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods\n  * Evaluate retrofit details \nTARGET AUDIENCE: \nThose who will benefit most from this training are public and private sector bridge inspectors\, supervisors\, project engineers\, and others responsible for field inspection of fracture critical steel bridge members. SUMMARY:Proven Safety Countermeasures Workshop - South Jersey
DESCRIPTION:New Jersey is currently a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) focus approach state for both Pedestrians and Intersections\, with approximately 24% of fatal and serious injury crashes involving Intersections and 27% involving Pedestrians and Bicycles. In New Jersey\, approximately 60% of fatal and serious injury crashes are occurring on the local system.\nThe New Jersey Local Technical Assistance Program (NJLTAP) has partnered with the FHWA Division Office\, NJDOT Bureau of Safety\, Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs and Local Aid and Economic Development\, and our three Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) to develop a half-day workshop focused on the FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures and the funding available for improvements to the local system. \nThis workshop provides guidance on the FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures that local public agencies can implement to successfully address roadway departure\, intersection\, and pedestrian and bicycle crashes. The course will provide emphasis on intersection and pedestrian safety countermeasures\, as well as potential funding sources (both federal and state) for implementing such countermeasures. Further\, emphasis will be provided to include ways to implement the countermeasures into existing projects as proactive low-cost solutions to safety improvements. \nRegistration is required for this event.
