SUMMARY:TNJ Institute: Neighborhood Empowerment Models
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design and ways to empower community stakeholders throughout the process. \nAbout this Event \nNeighborhood Empowerment Models: Crime Prevention and Beyond \nStrategies and opportunities for neighborhood improvements are available through a variety of programs and formats. But it takes high quality community engagement and leadership to put strategies into action and create vibrant places where people want to live\, work and visit. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a community problem-solving approach that brings together law enforcement\, city planners\, residents and local stakeholders to assess a neighborhood’s vulnerabilities to crime and collaboratively develop meaningful solutions. Community members can become leaders by self-organizing within a multi-disciplinary team to work ahead of or in tandem with local government rather than waiting for government-led projects. Good lighting and community-driven design and maintenance of public spaces are just a couple examples of how communities can help deter crime and make members of the community feel safer. \nThis workshop will go beyond training participants in crime prevention concepts. It will demonstrate how the CPTED process provides a model for empowering members of the community within a self-guided process for problem identification\, development of solutions\, and executing physical and social changes in their environments. \n*Snow date (if needed): Wednesday\, December 11\, 2019* \nTo register: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/tnj-institute-neighborhood-empowerment-models-tickets-79761024371

SUMMARY:NJLTAP – Traffic Incident Management Training for Emergency Responders
DESCRIPTION:Three vehicle crashes involving injuries occur every minute in the United States putting nearly 39\,000 incident responders in harm’s way daily. Disruption and congestion from these incidents can increase the likelihood of secondary crashes\, cause delays\, and increase driver frustration. The longer responders remain on the scene\, the greater the risk they\, and the traveling public\, face. Correct traffic incident management (TIM) focuses on responding in a way that protects motorists and emergency personnel while minimizing negative effects on traffic. TIM practices include detecting\, verifying\, and responding to incidents; clearing the incident scene; and restoring traffic flow.\nUsing a multi-discipline approach\, first responders in New Jersey will learn how to operate more efficiently and act collectively. The training covers topics including TIM guidelines\, fundamentals\, and terminology; notifications and scene size up; scene safety and risk management; traffic management; special circumstances; clearance; and termination. \nThis course is open to all traffic-incident first responders including personnel in law enforcement\, fire fighting\, emergency medical services (EMS)\, public safety\, public works\, towing and recovery\, and hazardous materials (HAZMAT). \nFor more registration information. https://cait.rutgers.edu/event/njltap-traffic-incident-management-training-for-emergency-responders-3-2/
