SUMMARY:TRB Webinar: Pavement Design Role Reversal: Mixtures Before Design and Construction
DESCRIPTION:TRB will conduct a webinar on Thursday\, August 23\, 2018 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM ET that will illustrate case studies where asphalt mixtures were specifically designed to meet situations in which conventional design approaches were not appropriate. In conventional practice\, the pavement is designed using a set of standard asphalt mixture properties\, resulting in a structural pavement thickness to meet traffic\, climate\, and safety conditions. However\, there are times when this approach yields poor pavement performance\, such as when high volume roads must be prematurely rehabilitated. This webinar will explore recent advancements in asphalt material modification\, mixture design\, and performance testing that now allow asphalt mixtures to be specifically formulated and produced to meet challenging pavement design and construction needs.\nThis webinar was organized by the TRB Standing Committees on Structural Requirements of Asphalt Mixtures\, Non-Binder Components of Asphalt Mixtures\, and Design and Rehabilitation of Asphalt Pavements. \nSome registrants will need to pay $95 to attend this webinar. Sign into http://MyTRB.org to view registration information. \nWebinar Presenters \n * Kevin Hall\, University of Arkansas\n * Robert Blight\, New Jersey Department of Transportation\n * Jay Thompson\, South Carolina Department of Transportation\n * John Harvey\, University of California at Davis \nModerated by: Kevin Hall\, University of Arkansas \nRegistration questions? SUMMARY:Pedestrian Safety Workshop
DESCRIPTION:What steps can communities take to ensure equal access and safety for all roadway users – pedestrians\, bicyclists\, motorists\, buses and trucks? Together North Jersey (TNJ)\, a broad public partnership\, led a large-scale planning process that asked people throughout the region how to improve their communities. That led to strategies for improving pedestrian safety appearing throughout the plan’s Focus Areas and community goals related to the environment\, the economy\, open space\, community development and redevelopment\, public health and public safety. This workshop will walk participants through a series of strategies aimed at putting the TNJ Plan into action to create safe and vibrant places for pedestrians. It will explore where pedestrian-related improvements should be prioritized\, what makes a place more pedestrian friendly\, how to slow traffic\, and how infrastructure design standards can help accomplish these goals. The workshop will also highlight programs that communities can use to plan\, build and even help pay for pedestrian safety improvements.

SUMMARY:Repurposing Underutilized Properties to Encourage Economic Growth
DESCRIPTION:The Together North Jersey Competitiveness Task Force is sponsoring its second workshop exploring strategies for repurposing vacant and underutilized properties on June 14. This workshop will concentrate on finding new uses for smaller sites\, such as strip retail centers\, brownfields\, old industrial buildings and commercial buildings. The first workshop in this series\, held January 17\, focused on repurposing larger sites\, such as old railyards\, larger brownfields and suburban office complexes. Repurposing underutilized sites is a strategy for supporting economic growth in many of North Jersey’s communities\, particularly those that have struggled to adapt to New Jersey’s post-industrial economy. These sites are often vacant or poorly maintained and can impede efforts to improve and redevelop a community. This workshop will consider strategies for reusing these once-productive properties that have characteristics preventing their easy reuse in a changing economy. These sites include\, older and smaller buildings in former industrial centers; brownfield sites awaiting remediation with substantial opportunities for redevelopment; and strip retail centers that no longer meet the current needs of retailers and consumers.\nThe speakers at the workshop have years of experience developing and redeveloping properties throughout North Jersey and finding solutions for their productive repurposing. \nFor more information: https://togethernorthjersey.com/?ai1ec_event=repurposing-underutilized-properties-to-encourage-economic-growth&instance_id=37104 https://togethernorthjersey.com/?ai1ec_event=repurposing-underutilized-properties-to-encourage-economic-growth&instance_id=37104

SUMMARY:Webinar: Green Infrastructure and Urban Resiliency
DESCRIPTION:Numerous communities across North Jersey have turned to Green Infrastructure (GI) as a stormwater management solution\, often with community input on planning and design. In an urban setting\, GI affords wide-ranging benefits. GI is an economical approach to water management that mimics the natural water cycle through the planting of trees and other vegetation. GI also enhances aesthetics and creates opportunities for traffic calming and pedestrian safety.\nThis webinar explores: \n * Changes in precipitation caused by climate change and impacts on urban communities\n * The benefits of GI\n * Challenges encountered in implementation and maintenance of GI\n * Examples of successful projects and partnerships throughout the state\n * Available funding opportunities \n For more information and to register: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/green-infrastructure-urban-resiliency-webinar-tickets-45562120529 \nThe Together North Jersey Resilience Webinar Series \nThis webinar is the second in a three-part series on resiliency planning co-sponsored by the Together North Jersey (TNJ) Resilience Task Force and the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA). The Together North Jersey Resilience Webinar Series presents information on approaches and tools available to local decision-makers to reduce the vulnerability of their communities to climate change. As part of the TNJ 2.0 initiative\, the webinar series emphasizes the path to implementation\, highlighting successful projects in North Jersey and elsewhere in the state and providing information on funding opportunities.

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Flood Insurance
DESCRIPTION:The sixth in an ongoing “Climate Adaptation Forum” series held three times per year.\nFlooding causes tremendous social and economic disruption to communities\, and recovery can be very costly. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was created in 1968 in to identify and reduce overall flood risk\, and provide affordable flood insurance. Almost all municipalities in the DVRPC region participate in the NFIP. However\, due to catastrophic storms in recent years\, such as hurricanes Katrina\, Sandy and Harvey\, insurance claims have vastly outstripped the premiums collected by the NFIP. As a result\, the program has borrowed almost $30 billion from the US Treasury that it cannot afford to repay. Furthermore\, climate change is projected to increase flood risk\, due to both sea level rise and more intense precipitation events. \nAgainst this backdrop\, this Climate Adaptation Forum will explore the structure of the NFIP\, which has been overdue for re-authorization since 2017\, and discuss policies under active consideration to restructure the program to appropriately assign responsibility for risk\, support vulnerable communities\, and enhance long-term resiliency. The tradeoffs involved are complex. However\, they must be addressed\, as the program continues to operate in a deficit and the value of assets exposed to risk from flooding is only expected to grow. \nThis will be an interactive workshop\, with plenty of time for discussion and questions. \nThe panelists include: \nCarolyn Kousky\, Ph.D.\, Director for Policy Research and Engagement at the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania. \nRichard J. Sobota\, CPCU\, Senior Insurance Specialist from FEMA Region III \nJohn A. Miller\, P.E.\, CFM\, CSM\, Water Resources Engineer\, Certified Floodplain & Stormwater Manager \nPlease register at: https://dvrpc.ticketleap.com/NFIP/ . There is no cost for this workshop. \nNetworking and Coffee from 9:00-9:30 am\nEvent from 9:30 am to Noon\nNetworking Lunch from Noon to 1:00 pm \nQuestions: Rob Graff 215-238-2826/ rgraff@dvrpc.org mailto:rgraff@dvrpc.org or Chris Linn 215-238-2873/ clinn@dvrpc.org mailto:clinn@dvrpc.org \nApproved for 2.5 APA AICP CM credits.\nAttendance certificates for ASFPM Certified Floodplain Manager Program CEC credit will be provided upon request. \nFor more information: https://dvrpc.ticketleap.com/NFIP/details
