SUMMARY:2018 Build a Better Mousetrap Competition Deadline!
DESCRIPTION:New Jersey’s Build a Better Mousetrap Competition provides a great opportunity to share those new ideas with others!\nPeople involved in the transportation industry often find better ways to do their jobs. Whether it’s a new gadget that improves the quality and safety of a project\, or an innovative process that reduces costs and improves efficiency\, it is typically the people on the front lines who discover the latest and best practices. \nThe competition is looking for submissions from employees of local or state public agencies (municipalities\, counties\, parks commissions\, NJ Department of Transportation\, NJ Transit) that have created different solutions to problems or found better ways of doing things. \nFor more information: http://cait.rutgers.edu/njltap/2018-build-better-mousetrap-competition

SUMMARY:Climate Change and Flood Insurance
DESCRIPTION:The sixth in an ongoing “Climate Adaptation Forum” series held three times per year.\nFlooding causes tremendous social and economic disruption to communities\, and recovery can be very costly. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was created in 1968 in to identify and reduce overall flood risk\, and provide affordable flood insurance. Almost all municipalities in the DVRPC region participate in the NFIP. However\, due to catastrophic storms in recent years\, such as hurricanes Katrina\, Sandy and Harvey\, insurance claims have vastly outstripped the premiums collected by the NFIP. As a result\, the program has borrowed almost $30 billion from the US Treasury that it cannot afford to repay. Furthermore\, climate change is projected to increase flood risk\, due to both sea level rise and more intense precipitation events. \nAgainst this backdrop\, this Climate Adaptation Forum will explore the structure of the NFIP\, which has been overdue for re-authorization since 2017\, and discuss policies under active consideration to restructure the program to appropriately assign responsibility for risk\, support vulnerable communities\, and enhance long-term resiliency. The tradeoffs involved are complex. However\, they must be addressed\, as the program continues to operate in a deficit and the value of assets exposed to risk from flooding is only expected to grow. \nThis will be an interactive workshop\, with plenty of time for discussion and questions. \nThe panelists include: \nCarolyn Kousky\, Ph.D.\, Director for Policy Research and Engagement at the Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes Center at the University of Pennsylvania. \nRichard J. Sobota\, CPCU\, Senior Insurance Specialist from FEMA Region III \nJohn A. Miller\, P.E.\, CFM\, CSM\, Water Resources Engineer\, Certified Floodplain & Stormwater Manager \nPlease register at: https://dvrpc.ticketleap.com/NFIP/ . There is no cost for this workshop. \nNetworking and Coffee from 9:00-9:30 am\nEvent from 9:30 am to Noon\nNetworking Lunch from Noon to 1:00 pm \nQuestions: Rob Graff 215-238-2826/ rgraff@dvrpc.org mailto:rgraff@dvrpc.org or Chris Linn 215-238-2873/ clinn@dvrpc.org mailto:clinn@dvrpc.org \nApproved for 2.5 APA AICP CM credits.\nAttendance certificates for ASFPM Certified Floodplain Manager Program CEC credit will be provided upon request. \nFor more information: https://dvrpc.ticketleap.com/NFIP/details

SUMMARY:Repurposing Underutilized Properties to Encourage Economic Growth
DESCRIPTION:The Together North Jersey Competitiveness Task Force is sponsoring its second workshop exploring strategies for repurposing vacant and underutilized properties on June 14. This workshop will concentrate on finding new uses for smaller sites\, such as strip retail centers\, brownfields\, old industrial buildings and commercial buildings. The first workshop in this series\, held January 17\, focused on repurposing larger sites\, such as old railyards\, larger brownfields and suburban office complexes. Repurposing underutilized sites is a strategy for supporting economic growth in many of North Jersey’s communities\, particularly those that have struggled to adapt to New Jersey’s post-industrial economy. These sites are often vacant or poorly maintained and can impede efforts to improve and redevelop a community. This workshop will consider strategies for reusing these once-productive properties that have characteristics preventing their easy reuse in a changing economy. These sites include\, older and smaller buildings in former industrial centers; brownfield sites awaiting remediation with substantial opportunities for redevelopment; and strip retail centers that no longer meet the current needs of retailers and consumers.\nThe speakers at the workshop have years of experience developing and redeveloping properties throughout North Jersey and finding solutions for their productive repurposing. \nFor more information: https://togethernorthjersey.com/?ai1ec_event=repurposing-underutilized-properties-to-encourage-economic-growth&instance_id=37104 https://togethernorthjersey.com/?ai1ec_event=repurposing-underutilized-properties-to-encourage-economic-growth&instance_id=37104
