SUMMARY:TNJ Institute: Neighborhood Empowerment Models
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design and ways to empower community stakeholders throughout the process. \nAbout this Event \nNeighborhood Empowerment Models: Crime Prevention and Beyond \nStrategies and opportunities for neighborhood improvements are available through a variety of programs and formats. But it takes high quality community engagement and leadership to put strategies into action and create vibrant places where people want to live\, work and visit. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a community problem-solving approach that brings together law enforcement\, city planners\, residents and local stakeholders to assess a neighborhood’s vulnerabilities to crime and collaboratively develop meaningful solutions. Community members can become leaders by self-organizing within a multi-disciplinary team to work ahead of or in tandem with local government rather than waiting for government-led projects. Good lighting and community-driven design and maintenance of public spaces are just a couple examples of how communities can help deter crime and make members of the community feel safer. \nThis workshop will go beyond training participants in crime prevention concepts. It will demonstrate how the CPTED process provides a model for empowering members of the community within a self-guided process for problem identification\, development of solutions\, and executing physical and social changes in their environments. \n*Snow date (if needed): Wednesday\, December 11\, 2019* \nTo register: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/tnj-institute-neighborhood-empowerment-models-tickets-79761024371

SUMMARY:Slide-in Bridge Construction Workshop Training
DESCRIPTION:Slide-in bridge construction (SIBC) is one of several accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technologies being advanced by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Compared to more traditional methods of bridge construction\, and due to its shorter work zone durations and reduced impacts on traffic\, SIBC (like other ABC technologies can:\n * Increase safety for workers\n * Enhance mobility\n * Reduce environmental impacts \nThe goal of the workshop training is to provide various key audiences with the essential information on slide-in bridge construction. \nTopics discussed in the workshop include: \n * Definition of SIBC\n * Benefits\n * Challenges\n * Costs\n * Decision Making (when and where to use ABC and which type of ABC to use)\n * Delivery Methods/Contracting\n * Planning\n * Design and Detailing\n * Hardware and Equipment\n * Submittals\n * Media/Public Relations\n * Case Studies \nFor training registration information. https://cait.rutgers.edu/event/slide-in-bridge-construction/

SUMMARY:NJLTAP – Design of ADA Curb Ramps and Pedestrian Access Routes
DESCRIPTION:This training is designed to ensure that pedestrian facilities and access routes\, in particular curb ramps\, along our roadways are properly design and constructed for all individuals\, including those with disabilities. This training was developed to provide information and best practices for those involved in the design and maintenance of curb ramps and pedestrian facilities\, and for those individuals that ensure the compliance to applicable accessibility laws and guidelines.\nThis course is taught from the perspective of the Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG)\, a best practice for accessible pedestrian facilities in the public rights-of-way. The workshop will include a brief overview of the ADA\, FHWA requirements\, group exercise designing curb ramps\, and video presentations by the United States Access Board to provide the attendees with background information and points-of-view of persons with disabilities navigating our pedestrian network. \nAgenda \n * ADA Who’s and What’s\n * Sidewalks and Street Crossings\n * Curb Ramp Components and Design Limits\n * Types of Curb Ramps\n * Lunch\n * Detectable Warning Surfaces\n * Curb Ramps Plans / Design\n * Group Design Exercises
