Lunchtime Tech Talk! WEBINAR: Goodluck Point Beneficial Use of Dredged Material via Nearshore Placement and Shark River Sediment Transport Model

March 24, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

Join the NJDOT Bureau of Research and attend our next Lunchtime Tech Talk! – a webinar featuring Maritime Transportation Research.
Nearshore placement of dredged sediment is a Natural and Nature-Based Features strategy with the dual benefits of providing ecosystem enhancement and reduction of coastal flooding while at the same time providing a viable, cost-effective long-term beneficial use option for disposal of dredged materials. But, improper placement of dredged materials can damage habitat or wash away, providing little or no benefit. Strategic placement requires knowledge of site conditions and sediment transport behavior to provide ecosystem enhancement and resiliency. The researchers will present preliminary findings for a nearshore sediment placement project at Goodluck Point in Berkeley Township, New Jersey.

To support ongoing efforts to effectively manage the New Jersey Maritime Transportation System (MTS), the researchers are also customizing a Delft3D morphological model to improve estimation of channel shoaling for the state’s navigable waterways. Successful deployment of this model for the Shark River will facilitate expansion to the entire New Jersey MTS and support NJDOT’s efforts to improve navigability and facilitate operations and maintenance of the maritime network.

Presentations will be given by:

Daniel Barone, Ph.D., Associate Research Professor, Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences, Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) & Department of Geography, Rutgers University

Robert Miskewitz, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, Rutgers University
