Federal Land Management Agencies – Thermoplastic Technology- Bridge Applications
Thermoplastic composite technology was first utilized in the production of railroad crossties and over the past decade applications have expanded use to highway bridges. The recycled material has a much longer life span than a traditional wooden bridge, and it also offers positive features for elements encountered in extreme and variable climates. For these reasons the technology has been pursued by Federal Lands Management Agencies (FLMA) including the United States Forest Service (USFS) and United State Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
During this webinar the USFS and USFWS will present their experience with thermoplastic technology in bridge construction; highlighting their lessons learned and beneficial properties relative to FLMA bridge maintenance, including:
* Highly resistant to cracking and warping;
* fire resistant;
* resistant to most acids, salts, wood-boring insects, rot and won’t rust;
* virtually impervious to water;
* and maintains structural integrity in humid and wet environments.
USFWS Project Manager- “The thermoplastic materials are the environmentally right fit to provide a great bridge with long-term sustainable green technology for the Service.”
