Lunchtime Tech Talk! Making Work Zones Smarter: Data-Driven Decision Making

April 11, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Lunchtime Tech Talk! Presented by Thomas M. Brennan, Ph.D., PE Associate Professor, Civil Engineering, The College of New Jersey https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-work-zones-smarter-data-driven-decision-making-tickets-58307469210 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-work-zones-smarter-data-driven-decision-making-tickets-58307469210 https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-work-zones-smarter-data-driven-decision-making-tickets-58307469210
Sponsored by the NJDOT Bureau of Research, this lunchtime tech talk will feature Dr. Thomas M. Brennan https://civilengineering.tcnj.edu/2015/07/22/dr-thomas-m-brennan/ discussing his research on the use of probe vehicle speed data and how it can enable transportation agencies to use work zone performance metrics to evaluate queues and congestion, and indirectly measure the impacts of crash events on work zone congestion. Performance metrics can be used to systematically evaluate work zone policies and procedures and evaluate what practices worked and did not work, and to determine how to design future work zones. The presentation will demonstrate how probe vehicle data can be used to measure the before, during, and after transportation network impacts of a construction project.

Traditionally, work zones limit roadway capacity and increase the likelihood of queuing, leading to crashes within, and even before, a work zone. A smart work zone employs data-driven technologies to better manage the capacity and queuing to reduce the number of crashes, thereby improving safety conditions for roadway workers and improving the driving experience for travelers.

NJ PE and ACIP credits are available. The event is free to attend, please RSVP ahead of time by registering on the following page: Eventbrite https://www.eventbrite.com/e/making-work-zones-smarter-data-driven-decision-making-tickets-58307469210 .
