Rural Intersection Lighting and Innovative Policy Applications

January 21 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The nighttime fatality rate on the Nation’s roadways is three times higher than the daytime rate. Roadway lighting is a crucial element to improving conspicuity of the roadway during night conditions. Join this webinar to hear the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) share key statewide insights from a policy, implementation, and maintenance perspective on lighting.

Derek Leuer, P.E., MnDOT State Traffic Safety Engineer and Sue Zarling, MnDOT State Signal and Lighting Engineer, will present on rural intersection lighting. This presentation will share how MnDOT, along with local road partners, have identified rural intersections using risk assessments and surrogate safety measures. These efforts helped MnDOT prioritize locations that often have few crashes, but which systemically result in large numbers of fatal and serious injury crashes. MnDOT will also share how they implement low-cost, high benefit treatments such as lighting at numerous locations that would typically not qualify under more traditional methods.

Bhanupriya Sharma, P.E., Caltrans Senior Transportation Electrical Engineer, will present on statewide policy updates for lighting related to intersections and roundabouts. Information will include agency best practices and highlight innovative examples around the State.
